straight
8 2006,
London, UK
one super 8 cartridge, no editing
straight 8 has been organized in London,
England since 1999, but it's screenings are held in an increasing
number of different cities each year, usually at festivals including
Rushes Soho Shorts Festival in London, Cannes Film Festival,
Port Eliot Lit Festival in Cornwall, England, and in San Francisco,
USA. A straight 8 production was organized in Vancouver,
Canada in 2004.
Some screenings are projected on the original super
8 film, while others are transferred and projected on video in large
cinemas.
The first straight 8 DVD includes 14 of the best films from 2005.
Entrants have up to 3 months to shoot an edited-in-camera
film on their numbered, super 8 cartridge, and return it un-processed.
The first time they can see their work is with the public audience. They
are required to get signed release forms from any actors. The number of
entrants is limited, different films are shown at each screening, and
some films are not shown publicly, but those artists receive detailed
feedback. There are no prizes. Entry Fee: £65 includes film and
processing.
straight 8 is organized by Ed Sayers and Ben Gregor,
bicyclists who make commercials and develop movies in London. They've
also made TV programmes about straight 8 for UK's Channel 4. straight
8 San Francisco is organized by Dav and Kate.

The 25th Atlantic Film Festival (Sept.16-23) presents
Attack of the 50-Foot Reels
with Norwood Cheek of Flicker
an annual event in Los Angeles since 2000.
After taking Norwood's Super 8 Filmmaking Workshop
on Sept.16,
9 Atlantic artists each shot a super 8 film Sept.17-18, edited-in-camera,
then w/ their soundtracks, saw the video transfers 1st time at premiere
Thursday, September 22, 2005
Park Lane 4, Halifax, Nova Scotia
ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT REELS is a unique opportunity
that gives participants a crash course designed for Super 8mm filmmaking.
Developed by veteran director Norwood Cheek, this intensive workshop is
a hands-on experience that involves shooting an entire roll of film, which
will later premiere during the Festival. Once the participants have completed
the workshop, they have two days to shoot their film, then quickly create
a soundtrack while the film is being processed, all in the nick of time
for the film’s premiere. Norwood Cheek
has been making Super 8 films for 25 years and teaches classes and workshops
on getting the most out of this small gauge film. He started Flicker –
an ongoing short film series in Chapel Hill, North Carolina -- in 1994,
and brought this screening series to Los Angeles in 1997.
In 2001, he started the L.A. Attack of the 50 Foot Reels - an annual
Super 8 in-camera shoot-to-show film festival first started in 1999 by
James Parrish at Flicker Richmond, Virginia. Norwood publishes and writes
the ‘zine, Flicker Guide to the World of Super 8 Filmmaking. He
has made many Super 8 and 16mm short films and has directed more than
70 music videos for bands including SuperChunk, AFI, Ben Folds Five, French
Kicks and Squirrel Nut Zippers. He directed and shot Young Rock, a documentary
on the Chapel Hill music scene. He is also a musician and composes music
for his short films.

reel/3 minute films "in-camera", then give the "unprocessed"
film to Flicker LA. Yale Film
& Video processes it & transfers it to digi-beta for viewing
on the large Egyptian screen. The night of the screening will be the first
time even the filmmakers will get to see their films! They give Flicker
their original soundtrack, which is started with the first picture. If
it works, it works. You never know what you'll get! That's the way it
is with the daring and nervous filmmakers, who will all be in attendance.

Independent Filmmakers Coalition (IFC),
Kansas City presents
The Bentley Film Festival - "The
Bentleys"
A contest named after Bentley Super 8 cameras. Since 1993!
Coordinator - Kelly Farrar
Saturday, December 3, 2005, 7pm
Fahrenheit Gallery, 1717 W. Ninth St., Kansas City,
Missouri
A contest that invites aspiring and experienced filmmakers
to plan and shoot a roll of super 8 film in sequence. By November 23
the filmmakers turn in their unprocessed film, which the IFC then processes.
Not even the directors see their completed films until the public screening
on December 3. The uncut, unseen films make for a fun and unpredictable
evening. In-camera special effects are allowed, and though filmmakers
are shooting silent film, they can accompany it during the screening
with a CD, or live sound.
“The Bentley contest lets filmmakers develop
their pre-production skills since they must film their short movie in
sequence without retakes or the ability to edit later.”
(Matthew Stevens, IFC Member, former Bentley Coordinator).
