THE
RULES OF "SHOOT & SHOW"
All new films are made just
days or weeks before the public premiere, sometimes
with a common theme, or film stock. "Post-production"
is not allowed. Any editing, titles or effects are done
"in-camera", in "one take",
on one, 50-foot, 3-minute roll of reversal (positive)
film, so the films can be finished quickly and cheaply and
are ready to show right after being processed. Super
8 is the ideal format, with inexpensive, accessible cameras,
a few different, inexpensive, reversal stocks on 3 minute rolls,
and labs within shipping distance.
Most organizers require the films be given
to them finished, but unprocessed. They then get them
all processed and show them at the public premiere without
even the artists seeing their own films first. This increases
the surprise for the artists and the audience. The artists may
show their film silent, or provide a seperate soundtrack,
recorded and played "wild" (not perfectly synchronized),
or in a live performance.
Some organizers project the films on the
original super 8 or 16mm reversal film to mid-size audiences
in bars or halls. Other organizers transfer to video for
projection in large cinemas to hundreds of people.
Artists pay a fee to cover the organizer's
cost of film & processing, and shipping to the lab
and back. Some organizers award prizes selected by a jury
or the audience, and most show all films submitted,
but some don't.

A Small (Gauge) History of
Flicker-Richmond’s
Attack of the 50-Ft. Reels!
by James Parrish 2007,
founder of Flicker Richmond, and co-founder
of Richmond Moving Image Co-op <<<
Sometime during the first year running
the Richmond
Flicker (April 1998-June 1999) I stumbled
across a website that described The
Bentley Film Festival, aka The
Bentleys, a film event where aspiring and
experienced filmmakers plan and shoot a roll of
Super 8 in sequence, or edited in-camera. Back then
I think they required folks to use a Bentley camera
(hence the name) to level the playing field. Bentleys
were some of the cheapest Super 8 cameras ever
made. Anyway, it sounded really exciting and interesting
to me, and I was looking for a way to encourage more
folks to make Super 8 films.
Around the same time I stumbled across
an old B-movie poster for Attack of the 50-Ft.
Woman and our Attack of the 50-Ft. Reels
show was born. The first one was held in September
1999 and we’ve held one every year but 2005
– that year we held a special Kodachrome 40
Tribute, which included some 50-ft. reel type films.
The first Attack of the 50-Ft. Reels show was
particularly magical, with almost 300 people
turning out for the screening. But what I remember most
are those little 50-ft. gems – Super 8
diamonds in the rough (many not rough at all!) that
inspire me as a filmmaker and artist.
I think it’s great that our Attack
of the 50-Ft. Reels inspired other Flicker fests
to start their own versions (just like I was inspired
by the Bentleys). I love the 50-Ft. Reels shows because
first-time filmmakers are in the mix with seasoned
filmmakers, filmmakers don’t get to see their
films until the night of the show (ah, the suspense!),
all kinds of styles are represented, and the sound (or
lack thereof) is always interesting. Long live “shoot
& show,” Super 8, small gauge filmmaking!!!
