INTRODUCTION

The Funnel Catalogue Supplement 1987 is meant to update and be used in conjunction with the FUNNEL COLLECTION CATALOGUE 1984. It has been organized in the same way and represents an addition of over 119 titles by fifty artists, a 120% increase to the original collection in two years. As before Super 8, 16mm films, film on video, slide/tape works, multi-projector presentations, original and/or non-reproducible film, film/performances and installations are represented.

The Catalogue Supplement has been designed to provide a thorough source of information about the thirty new artists represented. Listed alphabetically, a biography introduces each new artist, followed by a description of each piece in the Collection, and a black and white still from one of the artist's works. Following the main body of text is the Appendix, listing the new artist's filmography, videography, screenings and exhibitions, performances, bibliography and published writings. At the end is an Alphabetical Listing of Films for quick reference. In some cases the Collection contains only one piece by an artist, in others a body of work. The Funnel maintains file resources on all of the artists and can provide further information on their other work.

THE FUNNEL

The Funnel is an exhibition, distribution and production centre for artists' film and related media. The Funnel was founded in 1977 through the inspiration of Ross McLaren and the dedicated effort of many artists and filmmakers in a spirit of cooperation and experimentation. It has successfully established a structure which supports a range of activities, serving both the artist and the public.

Over 40 different programmes by Canadian and international artists are exhibited to the public each season. Events are presented in the Funnel's 99 seat theatre with equipment for 16mm, Super 8 and 8mm and slide projection, 3/4" video playback and live performance. Programming policy emphasis is to expose the work of emerging as well as established artists by both active solicitation and acceptance of proposals by individual artists and curators. In many cases the artist is present to discuss his or her work.

Editing, sound mixing, darkroom, optical printing and black and white film processing, animation and portable production facilities are available on a membership basis to local artists for production purposes, and are used to present public workshops. Other activities include: the publication of a Newsletter and calendar listing, maintenance of a library of books and periodicals on film theory and production, and a file and audio-tape resource which arc made available to the public for in-house use. Funnel members can also participate in a radio programme on CKLN 91.1 FM which is dedicated to the presentation of sound works by artists.

The Funnel has been actively promoting and distributing work to galleries, festivals and schools across Canada, the United States and Europe since its inception. To this end, and to promote critical commentary and writing about the works presented, the Funnel has published a series of catalogues of, its special exhibition programmes.

THE COLLECTION

The Funnel's permanent juried Collection was established in 1981. Since its introduction, the Super 8 and 8mm format has been used by artists for both economic and aesthetic reasons and many of the artists currently represented in the Collection have produced in Super 8. For various reasons an artist may never make copies of his or her work. A film or tape may change from presentation to presentation as the the artist reedits the piece; the nature of the film stock or material may preclude its reproduction; in the extreme a film may exist only as a sculptural entity to be viewed on rewinds. Each presentation of a work of this nature is a unique performance.

Film/Performance includes work where the artist/performer interacts with the image either in front of the image or as manipulator of the equipment of projection. The Collection contains work of this nature as well as performances that utilize other media and installations which use film as an element.

From the range of concerns and tendencies found in the Collection - material, social, political, aesthetic, representational, narrative - a sense emerges of the perspective the Funnel has on contemporary film practice and its position within the arts discourse. It is not a single aesthetic or style, rather it is an approach that encourages experimentation and does not delimit.

Films from the Collection have been recently screened at the Los Angeles Film Forum; Pacific Cine Centre, Vancouver, the Collective for Living Cinema, New York; Canada House, London England and the Festival Cinema Giovani, Torino Italy.

Nous regrettons de ne pas pouvoir faire tradruire ce catalogue; nous esperons combler ce desaut dans futures editions.
