INTRODUCTION
THE FUNNEL
The Funnel is an exhibition, distribution and production
centre for artists' film and related media, and was founded in 1977.
It has successfully established a structure which supports a range of
activities, serving both the artist and the public.
Over 50 different programmes by Canadian and international
artists are exhibited to the public each season. Events are presented
in the Funnel's 100 seat theatre with equipment for 16mm, 8mm and slide
projection, 3/4" video playback and live presentations. Programming
emphasis is on the work of living artists and in many cases the artist
is present to discuss his or her work. A policy continues to be to expose
the work of emerging as well as established artists. In addition a series
of historically important film enables the film-goer to view work that
has affected the development of the cinematic arts.
Darkroom, editing, sound mixing and portable production
facilities are used to present public workshops and are available on
a membership basis to local artists for production purposes. Other activities
include the publication of a bi-monthly Newsletter, maintenance of a
library of books and periodicals on film theory and production, and
a file and audio-tape resource which are made available to the public
for in-house use.
The Funnel has been actively promoting and distributing
work to galleries, festivals and schools across Canada, the United States
and Europe since inception. Its resources have recently been used by
such organizations as the Paris Biennale, the PBS (Buffalo) Frontier
Series, the Art Gallery of Ontario's 'Artists With Their Work' programme
, and the Ontario Arts Council's 'Artists In The Schools' programme.

THE COLLECTION
The Funnel's permanent, juried Collection was established
in 1981 and today contains over 200 titles by 48 contemporary artists.
The current emphasis is on Canadian artists, with some representation
from France and the USA, and on film—in a variety of formats and
presentation modes. It is distinguished from other collections by its
inclusion of work in both the 16mm and 8mm formats, original and/or
non-reproducable film, film/performance and installation.
Since its introduction, the 8mm format has been used
by artists for both economic and aesthetic reasons and half the artists
currently represented in the Collection have produced in 8mm. Its home-movie
roots of the one-person crew with the 'shoot from the hip' portability
of the $100 camera and the introduction of single-system sound and sophisticated
in-camera special effects have continued its popularity.
For various reasons an artist may never make copies of
his or her work. A film or tape may change from presentation to presentation
as the artist re-edits the piece; the nature of the film stock or material
may preclude its reproducibility; in the extreme a film may exist only
as a sculptural entity to be viewed on rewinds. Each presentation of
a work of this nature is a unique performance.
Film/Performance includes work where the artist/performer
interacts with the image either in front of the image or as manipulator
of the equipment (as in multi-projector presentations). The Collection
contains work of this nature as well as performance that utilises other
media and installations which use film as an element.
Accommodation of the diverse existing and possible future
formats is a policy of the Collection, and a reflection of an historical
and contemporary practice of artists' film.
From the range of concerns and tendencies found in the
Collection—material, social, political, aesthetic, representational,
narrative—a sense emerges of the perspective the Funnel has on
contemporary film practice and its position within the arts discourse.
It is not a single aesthetic or style, rather it is an approach that
does not delimit.

THE CATALOGUE
The catalogue has been designed to provide a thorough
source of information about these artists. Listed alphabetically, a
biography introduces each artist, followed by a description of each
piece in the Collection, and a black and white still. As an additional
resource the main body of the catalogue is appendixed with a listing
of the artists' filmographies, selected screenings, exhibitions, bibliographies
and published writings.
In some cases the Collection contains only one piece
by an artist, in others a body of work. The Funnel maintains file resources
on all of the artists and can provide further information on other work.
It is expected that future editions of the catalogue
will be published on a bi-annual basis. Updates on recent additions
to the Funnel Collection can be obtained by contacting the Funnel, and
are listed in Parallelogramme (a bi-monthly publication of the Association
of National Non-Profit Artist-run Centres).

FUNNEL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
RENTAL RATES
Unless the artist has otherwise indicated, the rental rate for film
is $2.50 per minute and is for one screening only. Rates for multiple
screenings are generally 100% for the first screening and 50% for each
additional screening. The rentor is responsible for shipping charges
both ways. There is a minimum charge of $20.00 per film. Package fees
may be negotiable.
Fees for performances and installations vary from artist
to artist and may be dependent on production costs. In some instances
works can be adapted to fit the circumstances. Please contact the Funnel
for further information.
SALES
Sale prices vary and are negotiable with the artist.

RESPONSIBILITY OF RENTOR
The rentor is responsible for any damage, loss or theft to the artists'
works sustained while in their possession or in transit to the rentor.
Foreign rentors are responsible for all brokerage and/or
duty costs required for receipt and return of the film.
Film is a fragile material. It is recommended that all
projection equipment be cleaned (particularly the gate) prior to each
screening as particles of dust and dirt can greatly damage the film.
The rentor is responsible for the prompt return of the
films. The films should be returned rewound onto the original reels.
COPYRIGHT
All the work in the Funnel collection is the property of the artist
and is protected by copyright legislation. No work or portion of a work
may be copied in any manner without the written permission of the artist
or the Funnel.
PREVIEWS
In-house previews of work can be arranged for programmers, critics and
purchasers. Out of house previews are only available for purchasers.
In these cases the previewer must bear the cost of the shipping charges
both ways. Exceptions to the above exist if the work is available on
video or arrangements have been made with the artist.

PROGRAMMING
Arrangements can be made for the Funnel to curate programmes of film
or to assist with programme selections.
VISITING ARTISTS
The Funnel acts as agent for most of the artists represented in its
Collection and can arrange for the artist to be present to discuss their
work. Artists' Honorarium for this activity varies.
ARTISTS' FILES
The Funnel maintains files on all the artists represented in its Collection,
as well as most of those it has included in its exhibition programme.
The files are made available for in-house use to programmers, critics
and students.
LIBRARY
The Funnel houses a library of books and periodicals on avant-garde
film theory, practice and production which is made available to the
public for in-house use.

THEATRE
The Funnel's 99 seat theatre and enclosed booth with complete projection
facilities for 16mm, Super 8mm and 3/4" video is made available
for rental when not in use for regular programming.
AGREEMENT WITH ARTISTS
The Funnel is a non-exclusive distributor/agent and all work in the
collection is the property of the artist. The artist agrees to honour
all bookings arranged by the Funnel. 75% of rentals and 100% of Honoraria
are returned to the artist. It is agreed that for screenings/presentations
arranged by the Funnel that include work not represented in the Collection
a similar financial agreement will be honoured. Submissions to the Collection
are juried at monthly Board meetings.
