Angel Baby (1979, 2 minutes, silent)

A Camera Dance, inspired by Norman McLaren's short, 35mm film, Pas de Deux (1968).

John mimes for the camera, playing a clumsy, baby angel learning to fly
- a character inspired by Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts character, the bird Woodstock.
A rare, early "narrative" film of John's, using a "script" and a "prompter" - Alan Walker.

Dressed in white, against a black background, John shot at one frame per second and used one-second time-exposures to create an effect of flapping wings and brush strokes.
To create the effect of flying in his studio, he had to shoot through a mirror and perform the story backwards (thus the prompter) and upside down, and consequently must show the film back to front, in turn requiring adjusting the focus and frameline differently from any film shown just previously or subsequently.

A one-shot film, shot non-stop over 45 minutes.
